    What sets Le Meurice apart

    1. The position

The hotel runs from the rue de Rivoli back to the rue du Mont Thabor, opposite the Tuileries Garden. The Louvre is one way along the arcades, the Orangerie and the Place de la Concorde the other, and the Musée d'Orsay is across the garden and the river.

    2. The rooms

The rooms are furnished in the style of Louis XVI. Those on the front look over the trees of the Tuileries to the Left Bank, and the suite on the top floor has a terrace with a view of the whole city.

    3. Restaurant Le Meurice and Le Dalí

The main restaurant is a room modelled on the Salon de la Paix at Versailles, overlooking the garden. Le Dalí, under a vast painted canvas, serves through the day, and Bar 228 is one of the classic hotel bars of Paris.

    4. Dalí and Starck

Salvador Dalí took the Royal Suite for a month a year for thirty years, and the hotel has made the most of it since. Philippe Starck redesigned the public rooms in 2007 with the painter in mind.

Two centuries on the rue de Rivoli

Le Meurice opened in 1815, founded by a postmaster from Calais who saw that the British travellers arriving in Paris after Waterloo wanted a hotel that worked the way they were used to. It moved to its present address on the rue de Rivoli in 1835, and has been called the hotel of kings ever since: Alfonso XIII of Spain kept a suite here.

From 1940 to 1944 it was the headquarters of the German military governor of Paris. It was here, in August 1944, that General Dietrich von Choltitz was in command when Paris was liberated.

The hotel was rebuilt behind its façade in 1905 to 1907 and has been renovated several times since. It belongs to the Dorchester Collection, and was among the first hotels to receive the Palace distinction, in 2011.
