What sets Hôtel Lutetia apart
The Left Bank

The building
Its façade, of 1910, is where Art Nouveau turns into Art Deco: stone carved with vines and grapes, and long curved balconies. The interiors were restored between 2014 and 2018.
Bar and brasserie
Bar Joséphine, named for Josephine Baker, under a fresco uncovered during the restoration, and the Brasserie Lutetia on the corner, a meeting place of the neighbourhood for a century.

The hotel that remembers
The Lutetia opened on 28 December 1910. It was built by the Boucicaut family, owners of Le Bon Marché across the street, so that the store's customers from the provinces had somewhere suitable to stay. Its architects were Louis-Charles Boileau and Henri Tauzin.
Between the wars it was the hotel of writers and artists: James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, Josephine Baker. In the late 1930s German exiles opposed to the Nazis met here. Then the occupier took it over, as the headquarters of German military intelligence.
In 1945 it became the place where survivors of the concentration camps were brought on their return to France, and where families came to look for them. A plaque on the façade records it. The hotel reopened in July 2018 after four years of restoration, and since April 2025 has been managed by Mandarin Oriental.
