The gallery
Thaddaeus Ropac opened his first gallery in 1981 in Lienz, in the Austrian Tyrol, when he was barely out of his teens. He worked for a time as an assistant to Joseph Beuys, and moved to Salzburg in 1983, where the gallery still occupies the Villa Kast, a nineteenth-century town house beside the Mirabell Garden.
A gallery in the Marais, in Paris, followed in 1990. In 2012 he added a second Paris address at Pantin, in a group of former factory buildings large enough for the biggest canvases of Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. London opened in 2017 in Ely House, a Georgian mansion in Mayfair, and Seoul in 2021.
The gallery works with around seventy artists and with the estates of Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd and James Rosenquist. Its position between the German-speaking world, France and America is unlike that of any of its rivals.
