The gallery

Barbara Gladstone was a professor of art history before she became a dealer. She opened her gallery in New York in 1980 and gave it a reputation for showing difficult work early and standing by it: the first solo exhibition of Matthew Barney, in 1991, is the best known example.

The gallery moved to Chelsea in 1996 and later opened in Brussels and in Seoul. Alongside living artists, among them Alex Katz, Anish Kapoor, Shirin Neshat and Ugo Rondinone, it took on the estates of Keith Haring, in 2010, and of Robert Mapplethorpe, in 2017, and works with those of Robert Rauschenberg and Alighiero Boetti.

Barbara Gladstone died in 2024. The gallery continues under the partners she worked with.
